Chinese researchers are exploring an ambitious passenger aircraft concept that could redefine the design of large commercial planes, with a proposed capacity of more than 800 people and a wingspan of about 85 metres.
Unlike conventional airliners, which use a cylindrical fuselage attached to separate wings, the proposed aircraft would use a blended flying-wing configuration, in which the main body and wings form a single aerodynamic structure.
Researchers believe the unconventional design could offer potential advantages in aerodynamic efficiency. By reducing the drag associated with a traditional fuselage-and-wing arrangement, the configuration could potentially improve fuel efficiency while creating significantly more usable space inside the aircraft.
The proposed aircraft’s 85-metre wingspan would make it an exceptionally large machine. It would be roughly 1.6 times wider than the US B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, highlighting the enormous scale of the concept.
Researchers have already tested a scale model in a wind tunnel at speeds approaching Mach 0.8, providing an opportunity to study how the unusual configuration performs under conditions representative of high-speed flight.
However, the project remains at the research and experimental stage. There is currently no full-scale prototype, commercial production programme or announced timeline for passenger flights.
The concept nevertheless illustrates the direction in which researchers are exploring the future of large-scale aviation, particularly as the industry seeks aircraft designs that can carry more passengers while improving aerodynamic and energy efficiency.
If such a design were eventually developed into a commercial aircraft, its combination of enormous wingspan and cabin capacity could represent a major departure from the conventional airliner designs that have dominated passenger aviation for decades.
For now, the 800-plus-passenger flying wing remains a research concept—but its scale offers a striking glimpse into what the next generation of aircraft could potentially look like.
